Memorial Day is a precious holiday for our nation. It’s an annual day we set aside to stop and intentionally reflect with gratitude on the soldiers who laid down their lives protecting us. Each year I am reminded of the sacred connection this holiday has to our faith.
Jesus told us, “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends (John 15:13).” Jesus did more than talk the talk, he walked the walk. He modeled for us this great value by laying down His life for us.
Recently, I have been studying the history of war. I often find spiritual parallels in this area; there are many similarities in spiritual war and physical war. I find it incredibly interesting that America intentionally built into her soldier training a primary value of love. Our soldiers are taught to fight for the brother or sister by their side and then for goal of protecting the homeland. So many armies have been trained to fight for glory first.
This is a powerful reminder that our biblical values do work! In closing, please take a moment to reflect with gratitude for the sacrifice others have made so you can live in safety. Then take another moment to thank Christ for that same action to bring you salvation.
